As we embark on the journey of 2024, it's crucial for teams to realign and set new goals. The beginning of a new year is not just a time for personal resolutions but also an opportune moment for teams to rejuvenate and redefine their objectives. In this spirit, let's explore a novel approach to setting team goals, inspired by a recent discussion on the concept of "Futurerspective." 1. Download the Reflection Template to begin.
2. Watch the video below.
Unlike the traditional retrospective approach, where teams reflect on past actions, the Futurspective method focuses on forward-thinking. It's about envisioning where the team wants to be and identifying the steps to get there. This method uses a familiar tool of ours in an innovative way – the sailboat poster, a popular tool from previous discussions, which can be downloaded from our website.
Setting the Course for 2024
The first step in this process involves gathering your team and pondering some critical questions:
Team Composition: Who is in the boat? Recognize the members of your team and their roles in the journey ahead.
Defining the Goal: What is your destination for 2024? Establish a clear, shared goal and understand how you will measure success. This clarity not only provides direction but also serves as a motivational force.
Identifying Accelerators: What will propel your team forward? Brainstorm the factors that will aid in achieving your goals. These are your 'winds' that will fill the sails and push the team towards the destination.
Recognising Blockers: What challenges might impede progress? Identifying potential obstacles, or 'sharks', allows the team to proactively address them, ensuring a smoother journey towards the goal.
By the end of this exercise, your team will have a clear visual representation of its composition, goals, success measures, accelerators, and potential blockers. This powerful tool not only aids in planning but also keeps the team aligned and focused throughout the year.
Taking the Next Steps
Once you have this framework, it's essential to integrate these insights into your regular planning and workflow. One effective way to do this is by creating a 'Wall of Work', a concept we've discussed in previous videos. This visual tool helps in tracking progress and maintaining focus on the team's objectives.
